When we dehumanize celebrities, we dehumanize ourselves

  1. I want to thank you for the encouraging comments you made in your opinion statement on April 27, 2011 with reference to Michael Jackson. I believe what you said is exactly what happened and is still happening concerning Michael Jackson.

People can’t or refuse to see him as the human-being he was; but they saw him as someone who wasn’t human or who didn’t look or act like them. Michael was completely removed, by many, from nature as being human. While some chose to find fault with him others chose and still choose to worship him, both being extreme. I think the world is perplexed and for the most part we don’t know what we want.

I wonder if most of the people who continue to inspect and dissect every facet of this man’s life has ever had to live his life? I think not yet they offer opinions about it. He didn’t have the life I had. Mine was not entirely a deprived life but it wasn’t a middle-classed one either. Still, I would say that I had a typical childhood. I was able to run, jump play and do the customary things growing children could do back in those days.

And you’re right people tend to think they have a right to know things about those who are celebrities or who may be in what we call the “Lime Light”. So what they still deserve to enjoy a private life. They have a right to enjoyment of that life without the nosiness of the public. We stand ready to accuse but yet we haven’t swept around our own front door.

Michael Jackson deserves the respect he never got while he lived, especially here in the United States. He felt he had to go from country to country just to be loved. Isn’t that a shame? A man is without honor in his own country. Jesus was a great example of this, but he taught us to do better. We have to love one another and not just with words but in our performance; how we conduct ourselves.
